Melatonin

Quick summary of the science :

Melatonin is a hormone primarily produced by the pineal gland in the brain, best known for its role in regulating sleep-wake cycles. It is synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan and its production is stimulated by darkness and inhibited by light, aligning the body’s internal clock with the external environment. Melatonin facilitates sleep and modulates circadian rhythms, making it crucial for maintaining consistent sleep patterns and overall health. Its secretion is regulated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus, which receives signals about environmental light levels from the eyes and adjusts melatonin production accordingly.
